Dentro de un amplio espectro que cubre desde los más salvajes sonidos góticos hasta increíbles pasajes orquestales, Epica han conseguido un éxito fulminante y sin precedentes en la historia reciente del género metálico con su álbum debut “The Phantom Agony” (2003).

Medio año después la banda holandesa lanza su tercer single, “Cry For The Moon” (2004), y como no podía ser de otra manera, Kike Snake (KS) logró entrevistar a su guitarrista fundador Mark Cansen (MJ) para conversar del pasado, presente y futuro de la banda.
KS: Hola Mark, es realmente un gusto poder conversar contigo. Me gustaría empezar esta entrevista mirando un poco hacia el pasado. ¿Cómo se produce tu salida de After Forever?, ya que muchos no conocen aún esa parte de tu historia.

MJ: Es un placer para mi también Snake… Bueno, yo dejé After Forever debido a que llegó un punto en el que no podíamos convenir sobre el futuro desarrollo de la banda. Pero, por supuesto fue una decisión muy difícil para ambos lados. Personalmente muchos de mis sueños se derrumbaron y quedé muy decepcionado, pero fue lo mejor para todos.

KS: …Y como es que entonces llegas a formar Epica y como contactas con el resto de miembros de la banda?

MJ: Ya fuera de After Forever, decidí formar Epica y para contactar a los músicos hice algunas audiciones. Se seleccionaron a los músicos más capaces con su instrumento, a los que tenían las mismas visiones musicales que yo y fueran además gente amistosa. Dentro de la banda, tenemos muy buenas relaciones personales.

KS: Cuéntanos un poco más de aquella primera etapa de la banda. ¿Cómo fueron las primeras presentaciones en directo?

MJ: ¿Nuestro primer concierto…? Fue realmente grandioso poder volver a pisar un escenario, casi como volver a casa. Para mí, After Forever había sido mi primera y única banda por lo que fue un poco extraño al principio tocar con otra gente, algo totalmente nuevo. Pero muy rápidamente nos acomodamos y sentimos bien como grupo. Nuestro primer concierto fue en Tilburg, abriendo para Anathema delante de 1.200 personas.

KS: ¿Es cierto que el nombre de la banda proviene del ultimo álbum de estudio de Kamelot, grupo del cual son grandes seguidores?

MJ: Es cierto que el nombre de la banda tiene origen en el último disco de Kamelot. Nosotros andábamos tras un nombre original y entonces salió editado “Epica” (2003), de una de nuestras bandas favoritas, e inmediatamente supimos que ese era el nombre que andábamos buscando. El significado detrás de ese nombre es de tipo filosófico y el de nuestras líricas también, así que todo encajó perfectamente. Además, era una manera de rendirle un tributo a Kamelot. No creo que Kamelot hayan sido una gran influencia para nosotros porque hacen otro estilo de música pero apreciamos muchísimo lo que hacen.

KS: ¿Que tipo de recuerdos guardas de vuestra primera demo “Cry For The Moon”?

MJ: Fue mi primera grabación con Epica y la primera grabación para Simone Simons. Fue muy especial y afortunadamente al presentarla a Transmission Records conseguimos nuestro contrato para grabar nuestro primer álbum de estudio. Este demo fue grabado en los estudios Excess (donde también grabé mi último álbum con After Forever) y fue producida por Hans Pieters.

KS: Cuando se concretó finalmente vuestro fichaje con el sello Transmission Records. ¿Por qué eligieron a Sascha Paeth como productor en los estudios Gate de Wolfsburg (Alemania), mucho más habitual en producciones de heavy/power metal?

MJ: Porque sabíamos de la reputación de Sascha como productor profesional. Cuando un productor es bueno, entonces sin importar el estilo de música que se toque, podrá grabar prácticamente todo. Es cierto que él había estado muy involucrado últimamente en producciones de heavy/power metal, pero cuando surgió la posibilidad de trabajar con nosotros, él dijo inmediatamente que sí...! A Sascha le gusta mucho de este tipo de música y eso fue muy importante para nosotros, porque entonces pudimos trabajar en un nivel más alto junto a él porque había además mucha pasión implicada. Había una especie de magia en el aire durante las grabaciones, así que estoy realmente feliz que lo hayamos elegido. Hasta ahora es el mejor productor con el que he trabajado.

KS: Entonces, ¿cómo describirías aquella la primera experiencia de grabación de Epica con “The Phantom Agony”?

MJ: Fantástica. Como ya te lo mencioné, definitivamente había algo mágico en el aire y ésa es la razón por la que todavía adoro este álbum. Todavía no puedo escuchar el disco sin el pensamiento de que no habríamos podido hacer un trabajo mejor. Es el mejor qué podríamos haber hecho en ese momento. Fue también muy grande trabajar con gente tan profesional como Sascha Paeth, Robert Hunecke-Rizzo y Miro.

KS: En vuestro disco debut podemos encontrar desde introducciones en latín (“Adyta”) y magníficas secciones de cuerda de base muy clásica, hasta el inconmensurable trabajo vocal de la mezzo-soprano Simone Simons (“Feint”) y las interesantes voces guturales a tu cargo, en una especie de contrastes perfectamente articulados. ¿Cómo describirías la música de Epica?

MJ: Nosotros simplemente lo llamamos metal gótico copara hacerlo más sencillo. Los soundtracks son también una influencia importante para nosotros y ésta será mayor en el próximo disco de Epica.

KS: ¿Y que podemos encontrar en las letras de “The Phantom Agony”?

MJ: Uno puede encontrar tanto temas filosóficos, como políticos y también religiosos. Yo recibo muchas preguntas de los fans sobre este punto. Al respecto, primero me gustaría decir que respeto todas las diversas creencias religiosas. Sin embargo no comparto el fundamentalismo, extremismo y odio dentro de todas las clases de religión. El deseo por el poder llega a ser tan grande que todo puede ser hecho para conseguirlo. Por supuesto que es grandioso ver como muchos encuentran paz en su religión y nosotros estamos felices por ello. Digamos que yo lucho contra los extremistas y a favor de la igualdad entre la gente.

KS: ¿Por qué elegir a los cortes “The Phantom Agony” y “Feint” como primeros singles por sobre el resto del disco? ¿Estas canciones poseen algo que las demás no?

MJ: Transmission Records las eligió. Nosotros no nos preocupamos por las canciones que se escogen para los singles porque nos gustan todas, si no, no las habríamos grabado. En el single de “Feint”, uno puede encontrar una versión del corte con piano, que a mi gusto a quedado mejor que el corte original del disco.

KS: Curiosamente, acaban de lanzar un nuevo single titulado “Cry For The Moon”. ¿Qué se siente recuperar un corte de vuestra primera maqueta y relanzarlo ahora como tercer single de “The Phantom Agony”?

MJ: Obviamente es también una canción del álbum. Sascha vino con la idea de hacer una remezcla de la canción y estuvimos de acuerdo en hacerlo. No suena totalmente a Epica pero es una versión agradable. El single es como una especie de cara B del anterior single “Feint”.

KS: Hasta el momento la crítica especializada ha caído particularmente rendida a vuestros pies. ¿Cómo sienten que ha sido el recibimiento de los fans?

MJ: ¡Fantástico! Estamos muy felices con la reacción de los fans. Nos apoyan de una gran manera. Tenemos cada día más de 1300 visitas en nuestra página web incluso ahora que la banda no está de gira debido a los preparativos del próximo disco de estudio. Estamos totalmente agradecidos a los fans y haremos todo en favor a ellos…

KS: También nos hemos enterado que la banda participará del Metal Female Voices Fest - Part 2 de Bélgica junto a Nightwish, Flowing Tears, Sengir, Darkwell, Visions Of Atlantis, Ashes You Leave y Syrens Call. ¿Cómo se sienten al participar en tal evento?

MJ: Será todo un honor tocar antes de Nightwish. En Bélgica ya hicimos muchos conciertos y participamos de la primera edición del festival. Ahora nos piden participar de nuevo porque quedaron muy satisfechos con nosotros. El cartel es muy bueno, así que estoy seguro que será un gran espectáculo.

KS: ¿Para cuando tienen previsto lanzar un nuevo álbum de estudio?

MJ: Para principios del 2005. Entramos al estudio el mes próximo y permaneceremos allí cerca de 3 meses grabando y mezclando. También lanzaremos dentro de poco un DVD con actuaciones en directo, video clips y los respectivos making off.

KS: ¿Qué posibilidades tienen de pisar suelo latinoamericano como parte de vuestra próxima gira?

MJ: Muchísimas. Estamos evaluando todas las posibilidades con Hellion Records. Deseamos tocar en muchas partes de Latinoamérica. ¡Es como un sueño para nosotros! A fin de año nos vamos a México para hacer 10 shows y para el año próximo año tenemos previsto recorrer el resto de Latinoamérica.

KS: Finalmente, nada más quiero agradecerte Mark por tu buen rollo y paciencia para esta entrevista.

MJ: Las gracias a ti…!!

Within a wide spectrum that ranges from the wildest sounds to incredible gothic orchestral passages, Epica have achieved an immediate success and unprecedented in recent history of the metal genre with their debut album "The Phantom Agony" (2003).

Half a year after the Holland band released their third single, "Cry For The Moon" (2004), and how could it be otherwise, Kike Snake (KS) was able to interview its founder guitarist Mark Jansen (MJ) to discuss the past , present and future of the band.
KS: Hey Mark, is really a pleasure to talk with you. I want to start this interview, looking a little into the past. How is your departure from After Forever?, Since many do not even know that part of your story.

MJ: It is a pleasure for me too Snake ... Well, I left After Forever because it came a point where we could not agree on the future development of broadband. But of course it was a very difficult decision for both sides. Personally many of my dreams collapsed and was very disappointed, but it was better for everyone.

KS: ... And then you come to is that epic form and how to contact the other members of the band?

MJ: You not After Forever, Epica and decided to form to connect to the musicians did some auditions. We selected the most capable musicians with their instruments, which had the same musical vision than me and were also friendly people. Within the band, we have very good relationships.

KS: Tell us a little more of that first stage of the band. How were the first live presentations?

MJ: "Our first concert ...? It was really great to again enter the stage, almost like coming home. For me, After Forever had been my first and only band for which he was a little strange at first playing with other people, something totally new. But very quickly we settled down and feel good as a group. Our first gig was in Tilburg, opening for Anathema in front of 1,200 people.

KS: Is it true that the band's name comes from the last studio album of Kamelot, which are large group of followers?

MJ: It is true that the band's name originates in the latest album from Kamelot. We were after an original name and then edited out "Epica" (2003), one of our favorite bands, and immediately knew that that was the name we were looking for. The meaning behind that name is philosophical and also that of our lyrics, so everything fit perfectly. Furthermore, there was a way to pay tribute to Kamelot. I do not think that Kamelot have been a big influence on us because they make different style of music but we very much appreciate what they do.

KS: What kind of memories you keep of your first demo "Cry For The Moon"?

MJ: It was my first recording with Epica and the first recording for Simone Simons. It was very special and hopefully the presentation to get our contract Transmission Records to record our first studio album. This demo was recorded at Excess studios (where he also recorded my last album with After Forever) and was produced by Hans Pieters.

KS: When I finally took shape your signing with the label Transmission Records. Why chose a producer Sascha Paeth at Gate studios in Wolfsburg (Germany) productions much more common in heavy / power metal?

MJ: Because we know Sasha's reputation as a professional producer. When a producer is good, then no matter what style of music that is played, you can record virtually everything. It is true that he had recently been heavily involved in productions of heavy / power metal, but when the opportunity arose to work with us, he immediately said yes ...! Sasha loves this kind of music and that was very important for us because then we could work at a higher level with him because there was also a lot of passion involved. There was a kind of magic in the air during the recordings, so I'm really happy that we chose. Until now the best producer I've ever worked with.

KS: So how would you describe that first experience with recording Epica "The Phantom Agony"?

MJ: Fantastic. As I mentioned, there was definitely something magical in the air and that is why we still love this album. I still can not play the disc without the thought that we could not have done a better job. It's the best we could have done at that time. It was also great to work with people as professional as Sascha Paeth, Robert Hunecke-Rizzo and Miro.

KS: In your debut album can be found from introductions in Latin ( "Adyta") and gorgeous string sections based very classical work until immeasurable vocal mezzo-soprano Simone Simons ( "Feint") and the guttural voices interesting to your expense, in a kind of contrasts perfectly articulated. How would you describe the music of Epica?

MJ: We just call it gothic metal Kopara easier. The soundtracks are also a major influence for us and it is higher in the next album Epica.

KS: And what we find in the lyrics of "The Phantom Agony"?

MJ: One can find both philosophical, and political and religious. I receive many questions from fans on this point. In this regard, I would first like to say that I respect all the different religious beliefs. But I do not share fundamentalism, extremism and hatred in all religion classes. The desire for power becomes so great that everything can be done to achieve it. Of course it's great to see as many find peace in their religion and we are happy about it. Let's say I fight against the extremists and promote equality among people.

KS: Why the cuts "The Phantom Agony" and "Feint" as first singles for the rest of the album? Do these songs have something that others do not?

MJ: Transmission Records elected them. We do not care for the songs that are selected for the singles because we like them all, otherwise we would not have recorded. In the single "Feint", one can find a piano version of the cut, which I like to become better than the original cut of the disc.

KS: Interestingly, just launched a new single entitled "Cry For The Moon". How does it feel to retrieve a cutting your first demo and relaunch it now as the third single from "The Phantom Agony"?

MJ: Obviously it's also a song on the album. Sascha came up with the idea of doing a remix of the track and we agreed to do so. It does not sound completely epic but is a nice version. The single is a kind of side B of the previous single "Feint".

KS: So far the critics have fallen particularly surrendered at your feet. How do they feel has been the reception from the fans?

MJ: Fantastic! We are very happy with the reaction from fans. They support us in a big way. We have over 1300 daily visits to our website even now that the band does not tour due to preparations for the next studio album. We are totally grateful to the fans and will do everything for them ...

KS: We also hear that the band will participate in the Metal Female Voices Fest - Part 2 from Belgium with Nightwish, Flowing Tears, Sengir, Darkwell, Visions Of Atlantis, Ashes You Leave and Syrens Call. How do they feel when participating in such an event?

MJ: It is an honor to play before Nightwish. In Belgium we did many concerts and participated in the first edition of the festival. Now we are asked to participate again because we were very satisfied with. The poster is very good, so I'm sure it will be a great show.

KS: For when they plan to launch a new studio album?

MJ: By the beginning of 2005. We enter the studio next month and will stay there about 3 months recording and mixing. Also we will launch shortly a DVD with live performances, video clips and the respective making off.

KS: What are the possibilities of stepping on Latin American soil as part of your upcoming tour?

MJ: Many. We are evaluating all possibilities with Hellion Records. We play in many parts of Latin America. It's like a dream for us! At year's end we go to Mexico for 10 shows for the year and next year we plan to tour the rest of Latin America.
